I can remember my roommate in college and his first attempt at weight loss. He had heard, like so many of us, that salads were a good source of nutrition, and great on a diet. So he proceeded to add a salad to lunch and dinner each day. He did not replace the entrée or the desert with a salad, he simply added a salad to the mix. Needs to say he did not lose any weight.
One of the simple axioms of life is “Eat Less – Lose Weight.” Now we also know that the converse is also true, “Eat More – Gain Weight.” If you don’t believe me I can submit lots of personal testimony to this simple fact.
As I was pondering the word this morning the family verse.
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
Psalm 34:8 (NIV)
So what does your diet of the Word look like? Are you eating just enough to survive? Are you just in maintenance mode trying to maintain your Spiritual weight? Or are you bulking up? Are you feasting on the Word so that you will be ready, strong and prepared for daily life.
What if we put as much effort into our spiritual diet, as we do to our physical diet. It is a rare day that I miss a meal. It is even rare that I miss an evening snack. When I am being deliberate about my eating I can be downright militant about what I eat and when. Why then do I find it so challenging to keep this same routine in The Word?
The other tried and true fact about weight loss is that exercise helps you lose more “fat” and gain “muscle.” James tells the simple face that hearing the Word needs to followed by acting on the Word.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Research has also shown that dieting works best when it is done with a level of accountability. To have someone with whom you can share your struggles and victories. In our spiritual fitness program we have two levels of accountability and support. The first level is with our coach, through prayer. The designer, creator and sustainer of life want’s nothing more then to support, encourage and advise you in your journey. The second level of accountability is with the body of Christ. Find a body of believers with whom you can study the Word, discuss it, and live it out!
