29 Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will trample down their high places.”
Deuteronomy 33:29 (NIV)
To many people looking at the church from the outside in affirm that Christianity makes people grumpy, un happy and some might even say miserable. These however are people who have not seen it from the inside, who have not understood what the church and the life of the Christian is all about. This is due in part to a poor witness on our part as to what the Christian life is like.
I love the simple words of Deuteronomy “Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord?” Good question? who is like us? We are a people saved by the Lord. We are a people declared to be “more than conquerors” (Romans 8:37), “a royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9) , “adopted children of the king” (Romans 8:15), just to name a few. What would happen if our witness would reflect that? What if our royal position, our “rejoicing in the Lord aways” (Philippians 4:4) attitude is what people saw when they met us?
Now don’t plaster some fake plastic smile on your face, that’s what got us into this trouble in the first place. I’m calling us to live the blessed life, to claim the promises of God as our own, and to show the word our joy. Joy that shines in the midst of our sorrow, in the time of our pain, and in the day of trouble.
It is time to recognize that our bridegroom (Christ) will not let his Bride linger in grief and suffering. (John 3:29) Come on church…. “who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword.”
