As I write this post I am somewhere in Oklahoma, traveling down Highway 69. We cruise at 70 mpg and then the next minute we hit a town and we are traveling 35 mph. I keep asking myself, is this really the fastest way? Consulting Google Maps, Ways, and Apple Maps, everyone seems to this this is the best.

If I were building the highways I would come up with a better route from Minneapolis to Houston. I also wonder if this uneasy feeling isn’t also related to the days in which we are living. Is this really the fastest route through this pandemic to the other side? Politics aside, it is hard to say. I also serve a congregation which is in transition and I am sometimes prone to ask, is this the best way through this?

Twenty-four time in the book of Psalms is the phrase “How long” spoken a couple of times by the Lord of his people, but mostly by his people of the Lord. Our constant impatience is not something new, but I do believe it is something that in our present society is getting worse. We are an instant society, we even talk about out speed with “fast food” “instant-this” and “instant -that.”

The Bible talks very little about the instant and the quick, unless you are talking about the actions of God. Paul writes to a church waiting for Christ’s return that “in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, we will all be changed.” (1 cor. 15:52) What Paul does not tell us is when this instant moment will come.

I don’t this it is because no one was asking Paul when the day would come, but because he did not know that he never gives an answer to the question “How long.” Except to say that God is NOT slow.

[9] The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9 NIV

That sounds like a good reason for God to wait, for everyone to come to repentance. This brings a new concern to my mind, it feels like we are moving further from repentance everyday. Does this mean that God’s return is going to be further off…”How Long?” I don’t think so.

Matthew does write;

[14] And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Matthew 24:14 NIV

Sounds to me like the secrete is to keep sharing the Gospel, Keep preaching, keep sharing, keep growing the Kingdom and when the time is right, He will return. So maybe we are on the fastest route.
