Today we will gather to celebrate my dear friend Harvey.  Harvey and I first met more than 13 years ago when I together with my wife Shirley and 4 year old son Isaiah moved in with Harvey and Marlene.  In Carver County terms 13 years is like 1.3 years – I’m still a new guy in Carver County.

The Lord had called me to Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia, from Christ Lutheran Church in Houston Texas.  From a church of 500 members to a church of 2000 members in a community that was growing fast.  The Lord saw fit in this move to humble me just a bit.  We needed to find a place to live but until that could be found Harvey and Marlene graciously opened their doors to my family.

When Harvey and I met I knew we were going to hit it off, we had so much in common.Let me share a quick list for you….

I Drive my “dream” Car a Honda Accord

Harvey has worked for FORD since he could walk

I was born in Wisconsin and am a die hard Packer Fan

Harvey was a Viking fan through and through

I enjoyed cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers

Harvey when not wearing purple wore Maroon and Gold – Go Gophers.

I enjoyed most music, classical, rock, big band, jazz, pop, instrumental, even a little rap.  I said most – I am not a fan of Country Music.

Harvey and Marlene watched two channels on their Satellite TV. ESPN for Vikings, and Gopher News and Games, and The Nashville Network!

I enjoyed food – desert especially!

Harvey enjoyed food – desert especially!

Desert is not exactly enough to grow a deep friendship over, but despite all this, we did grow to be good friends.

It was the one thing that truly mattered that made us friends.

We both loved Jesus and His church.

Harvey lived out the words of Paul from Galatians 3

Galatians 3:26-29 (NIV)
26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,
27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

In the (HBV) Harvey Beneke Version it would read…

Galatians 3:26-29 (HBV)
26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,
27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28 There is neither Packer nor Viking, Ford nor Accord, Country Music nor Rock, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

It is what I shared with Harvey and He shared with His world that made him special – It was the Love for Christ, given to him as a gift in the Water and Word of Holy Baptism that made Harvey – Harvey!

On Friday  when Shirley and I met with Marlene and the Girls there was lots of confusion, and questions, it all seems impossible to take in.  It reminds me of another Friday, when the disciples sat in stunned amazement at what had just happened it had gone all so fast from Thursday night dinner together through the arrest, trial and crucifixion.  But to quote Tony Campolo… It was only Friday – Sunday Coming.   Today is Sunday for Harvey, and that does not surprise me one bit.  After all Harvey is a FORD guy.

FORDsmall

And you know what FORD stands for:  First On Resurrection Day!
